Kalashram Kathak competition​

​

Hemantika 2017 is proud to be be hosting the European leg of the Kalashram Kathak Contest.

 

Initiated by Kalashram - the institution of Kathak maestro Padmavibhusan Pandit Birju Maharaj, the competition aims to provide a platform for young, upcoming Kathak dancers to showcase their talent. 

 

Kalashram Kathak Contest is taking place in 7 cities in India - Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Ahmedabad and Guwahati. London is the only international city hosting this competition.

 

The competition is open to participants from across UK and Europe.  The last stage will be judged by Pandit Birju Maharaj in person – a great opportunity for any Kathak student.

 

Eligibility: 

The competition is open to performers in two age groups: 

Budding Stars: Age 13 – 20 years 

Luminous Stars: Age 21 – 30 years

Qualifying Process: 

First round: 1 minute video to be uploaded by 4 November 2017 along with the completed online application form on the Kalashram website. Alternatively, the video can  be emailed to kathakcontest2017@gmail.com but the online application form must still be completed.

Semi final: A full piece to be performed on Monday 13 November 2017 (5pm-7pm) in London. The piece should be up to 6 minutes for the Senior group and 4 minutes for the Junior group. Candidates need to perform strictly on recorded music. Formal costume not essential. The judges are: Saswati Sen, Sukanya Shankar, Mira Kaushik, Neera Batra and Sushma Mehta.

Final: Saturday 18 November evening in front of an audience in London. Candidates need to perform strictly on recorded music. Formal costume required. The judges are: Pandit Birju Maharaj, Saswati Sen, Mira Kaushik, Pratap Pawar, Sanju Sahai, Usha Raghavan and Nikki Crane.  

 

 

Venue:

The venue for the semi-finals and finals is Patidar House, 22 London Road, Wembley HA9 7EX, London

 

 

Winners and prizes:

In each of the two categories there will be three positions - 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

All semi-finalists will receive a certificate.

The runners-up will receive a certificate and a cash prize.

The winner in each category will receive a certificate, cash prize and trophy. They will also be given a ticket to Mumbai to perform with winners from the other cities in a grand finale, to be held in December 2017.
