Spotlight is an initiative started in 2021which showcases work of our students who have shown extraordinary commitment, dedication and progress in their dance.
Year 2023
This year's first spotlight is on Sonia Chanderia Tillu - Kathak solo with live music.
Sonia has been pursuing kathak dance guided by her Guru Sujata Banerjee for over 12 years and has performed with SBDC across India, Spain, the UK and the USA.
She founded Sona Lisa Dance Company in 2018 through which she enjoys creatively exploring performance and participatory work that engages diverse audiences.
Her personal dance highlights include performing at NCPA theatre (Mumbai, 2017) and participating in the Akram Khan Company Classical intensive (Sadlers Wells London, 2019)

Next Spotlight is on Jaina Modasia - Kathak solo with live music
Jaina Modasia is an upcoming Kathak artist ceasing every opportunity life throws at her to grow as a dancer. She has been training under the guidance of Sujata Banerjee, completing all exams with the international examining board ISTD and has been teaching at Sujata Banerjee's Dance Company for many years. Jaina’s dance journey has allowed her to perform in many prestigious venues all over the UK and internationally.
Jaina was a BBC Young Dancer 2015 and 2017 category finalist, being one of five to represent South Asian dance nationally. She was also the Navadal 2017 winner and more recently experienced Hosting workshops with 100 students and performing at WOMAD festival.

Year 2024
Tulani Kayani-Skeef
Tulani Kayani-Skeef is a dance artist, performer and movement facilitator based in London. She currently teaches Kathak and is a company dancer at Sujata Banerjee Dance Company.
Since performing in leading dance competition ‘BBC Young Dancer 2019’, Tulani has gone on to perform in a number of renowned UK venues including Sadler’s Wells and Royal Festival Hall. In 2023, she began her choreographic journey with a co-created piece, ‘You With U’, which premiered at Resolution 2023 at The Place theatre.
Her work explores the topics of societal conditioning and self-love, and has led to her creating ‘In Your Skins’ - a session empowering women to embrace their bodies through movement.

This term the Spotlight is on two of our young students, Aishani Chatterjee (Grade 6) and Ojasvi Gulvady (Grade 5). This event promises to be an inspirational Kathak 'soiree'.
